With persistent rain expected to continue throughout Monday and into Tuesday, local officials are urging safe driving and are offering storm tips for residents, including where to pick up sandbags throughout San Mateo County.

A Flash Flood watch was issued for the North Bay mountains and valleys from noon Monday to late Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. Periods of heavy rain are expected to continue throughout the day and night, with lighter rain forecast for Tuesday.

Winds are also expected to be strong this evening, with breezy conditions for Tuesday, officials said.

San Mateo County officials have offered a number of resources and tips for local residents during the strongest rain storm of the season. They include checking to be sure roof drains and down spouts are clear of debris, keeping children from creeks and large drains, keeping leaves and yard trimmings out of storm drains and gutters and to refrain from storing hazardous materials in areas subject to flooding.

County residents in unincorporated areas may pick up to 15 sandbags free of charge at four locations, including the Grant Corporation Yard at 752 Chestnut Road in Redwood City. Call (650) 363-4103 for more information about the Redwood City site.
