Eight law enforcement officers involved in the fatal shooting of an armed man who opened fire in their direction outside of a Wells Fargo bank branch in Redwood City last month have been identified by the police department.

They are Redwood City police Sgt. Nick Perna, Sgt. Ed Conover, Officer Junsun Lee, Officer Richard Santiago, Officer Mark Alifano, Officer Dave Denning, Officer Ryan Kimber and San Mateo County sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Chiu.

The incident occurred Saturday, Dec. 30 outside the Wells Fargo bank in the 1900 block of Broadway. Police received a report of a person with a handgun pacing in front of the ATM about 2:30 p.m.

When police responded they found 31-year-old Marco Antonio Carlos, who some officers have known for years, and attempted to talk with him and establish a rapport. Carlos continued to pace back and forth with his finger on the trigger, and after he refused multiple requests to drop the gun, officers began deploying less-lethal weapons, police said. Before they could use them, Carlos fired in their direction, police said.

Seven officers and one deputy opened fire and Carlos died at the scene. Those law enforcement officers remain on paid administrative leave while the incident remains under investigation.
