A team of volunteers joined investigators with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday to search a mountainous canyon behind several homes along Melendy Drive in San Carlos, hoping to find evidence that could help solve a 1991 cold case murder.

The search occurred about 8 a.m. behind homes in the 3200 block of Melendy Drive near Cabot Court, and adjacent to the Big Canyon Trail, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation involves the murder of Marko Dzapo in his home by an unknown assailant on Feb. 13, 1991, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

The case remains unsolved and open.

The Sheriff’s Office assumed police services in San Carlos in 2010, and the Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit was formed in 2016. The unit works with numerous volunteers and full-time detectives in reviewing hundreds of cases from areas served by the Sheriff’s Office.

Typically, investigators review cases searching for any evidence that can be forensically tested or any other avenues of investigation to explore further,” the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone who may have information to provide on this homicide is encouraged to contact Detective Gordon Currie at 6503634051 or email at gcurrie@smcgov.org. The information will be shared will Cold Case Investigators.
