Man arrested on suspicion of stealing occupied vehicle in San Mateo

A 47-year-old man was arrested in San Mateo Thursday morning on suspicion of stealing a vehicle while there were two people inside, including a 1-year-old child, police said.

Police responded to a report of a kidnapping at about 10:43 a.m. in the area of 9th and Palm avenues. The learned that a woman had parked her vehicle in the 200 block of 4th Avenue, leaving her mother and her child inside the car and the keys in the ignition while she and her husband went to a nearby store, police said. Shortly after entering the store, the woman received a call from her mother to inform her that someone had stolen the vehicle. The mom ran out of the store after her vehicle and located it in the 800 block of B Street. Both her mother and child were inside the vehicle and safe, police said.

“Her mother identified a man who was walking away from the area as the suspect,” police said. “Officers obtained a description of the suspect, located him nearby, and safely arrested him.”

The suspect was identified as Kiarash Rezaee, a San Mateo resident. Rezaee and booked into the San Mateo County Jail for driving or taking a vehicle without consent, kidnapping a child under the age of fourteen, and kidnapping, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
