A student-led rally has been scheduled for Courthouse Square in Redwood City on Saturday, March 24, when the national March For Our Lives day of action descends upon Washington D.C.
The rally is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway. It will join hundreds of events nationwide that are supporting the March for Our Lives movement, which was inspired by young survivors of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead. The students and their supporters launched the movement to call for school safety and gun control.
The Courthouse Square rally “will consist of a local focus geared towards middle and high school students in the Bay Area,” organizers said in a statement Friday. Participants will have a chance to write letters to Congress, make posters and to speak, as there will be both pre-planned student speakers and an open mic session.
The event is being organized by Belmont Councilmember Charles Stone, Redwood City Councilmember Shelly Masur, Carlmont Journalism Adviser Justin Raisner, and students Sophie Penn (Carlmont), Holly Newman (Menlo-Atherton), and Ria Calcagno (Woodside).
