San Mateo police officers pulled a woman from the lagoon while she was suffering from a mental health crisis Wednesday night.

The incident started just before 8 p.m. near Kimberly Way and La Selva Street in San Mateo and concluded near Port Royal Avenue and Rocky Harbor Lane in Foster City, police said.

After learning from the woman’s husband she had recently given birth and was experiencing some sort of psychosis, they negotiated with the woman for nearly an hour before she submerged herself underwater, police said.

Crisis negotiators and officers trained in crisis intervention entered the water to safely bring the woman to shore. She was transported to a mental health facility for treatment, police said.

Those with depression, including postpartum depression, should seek treatment from their health care provider as soon as possible, police said. For more information, visit https://www.cdc.gov/.
