San Carlos dog parks close after reported cases of kennel cough

San Carlos City Hall Dog Park and Heather Dog Run have been closed until further notice following several reported cases of kennel cough, city officials announced Wednesday.

Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can spread between dogs through airborne droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Symptoms include a strong cough, often with a honking sound, a runny nose, sneezing, lethargy, loss of appetite and low fever, AKC said.

“It’s highly treatable in most dogs but can be more severe in puppies younger than six months of age and immunocompromised dogs,” the organization said.

The City of San Carlos says it is closing its dog parks out of an abundance of caution.

“During this time, both off leash dog areas will be cleaned and sanitized prior to reopening,” city officials said, adding a reminder that all dogs must have current license and vaccinations and be free from illness before they can visit the dog parks.
