A drone was recently used to help rescue a 19-year-old surfer stranded off the San Mateo County coast, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, which posted a video on social media of the incident Thursday.
The surfer was reportedly pulled out by the rip tide and was unable to get back to shore, so the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deployed one of its new drones in order to communicate with him. A drone pilot used the drone’s speaker to let the surfer know a rescue boat was on the way and to paddle out a little farther so the boat could safely take him on board.
The sheriff’s office expressed gratitude to Pillar Point Harbor Patrol for its assistance in the rescue.
