Within a seven-hour period later this month, the Tom Lantos Tunnels will become the site of “fire simulations, crash simulations and smoke.”
From 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, to 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, the Tunnels will be closed to traffic so that Caltrans can conduct its annual mandatory emergency response drill.
“The emergency management exercise will be a coordinated effort including the CHP, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Pacifica Fire and Police Departments, California Office of Emergency Services, Cal-Fire and other first responders,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
During the exercise, CHP will be on scene to help detour motorists, with those coming from Pacifica asked to head north on SR-1 to connect with southbound I-280, and those coming from Half Moon Bay to head east on SR-92 onto northbound I-280.
The exercise is weather permitting.
