Local law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for DUI incidents on St. Patrick’s Day, which is Wednesday, March 17.

The San Mateo and Redwood City police departments are among the agencies to have released statements this week warning about driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. San Mateo police said they’ll be patrolling from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. looking to take these drivers off the streets.

“If drinking is part of your plans, plan on designating a sober driver and find a safe way home,” Redwood City Police Chief Dan Mulholland said.

On St. Patrick’s Day 2019 in California, seven people were killed, and 116 others were injured in crashes caused by driving under the influence, police said.

The agencies credit their ability to increase patrols to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
