A 51-year-old San Jose man died in a collision early Tuesday on U.S. Highway 101 just north of Marsh Road in Redwood City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 4 a.m., a white Chrysler Van and red Dodge pickup truck were involved in a collision that caused the Dodge to come to rest in the northbound lanes, facing the wrong way, the CHP said.

A short time later, a Chevrolet Astro van driven by a 61-year-old Burlingame man collided head on with the Dodge, causing fatal injuries to the Dodge’s driver, who was also the car’s sole occupant. The driver of the Chevrolet sustained a broken left hand, the CHP said. The occupants of the Chrysler were not injured.

The identity of the victim who died wasn’t immediately known.

The CHP did not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision and encouraged witnesses to contact Officer Dunn at the Redwood City CHP office, (650) 369-6261.
