Redwood City man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, attempted purse snatching

A 22-year-old man was arrested on allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman while attempting to steal her purse in the Fair Oaks neighborhood of unincorporated Redwood City on Tuesday.

At about 7:45 p.m., the victim flagged down San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies in the 3100 block of Middlefield Road and told them she’d just been sexually assaulted by a man who tried to take her purse.

“The suspect touched the victim’s buttocks and slid his hand in between the victim’s legs,” sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies found the suspect in the area. He was identified as Alex Eduardo Gonzalez, and a record check revealed he had an active misdemeanor warrant with the sheriff’s office. He suspect was arrested, transported and booked to jail without incident on suspicion of felony sexual battery and felony attempted robbery, the sheriff’s office said.
