San Carlos: Burton Park to get new batting cages

in Community/Sports

Brand new batting cages could be coming soon to Burton Park in San Carlos.

At its meeting Monday, the City Council is set to vote on whether to approve the Burton Park Batting Cages Project and to authorize its advertisement for construction bids. The city said $215,000 have been provided by Premia Capital and Prince Street Partners to fund the batting cages, which will locate along the extension of the third base fence line at Flanagan Field.

The new cages will certainly be an improvement from the existing version.

In recent years, there has been a decline in the integrity of the batting cage foundation, and adjacent tree roots have lifted the concrete, creating an unsafe playing surface,” city staff said.

Stakeholder groups including Little League, Girls Softball, the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, and funding partners reviewed designs and provided input for the cages. “Updates to the design included retractable netting inside the cages to divide the space, padded turf surface, and receptacles for use of pitching machines,” city staff said.

City Council is tentatively set to award the project at its Sept. 13 meeting.
