Four juveniles have been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a 20-year-old man in a parking lot at Hillsdale Shopping Center Wednesday evening.
The minors, all 16-year-old residents of San Mateo, were booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall on charges including assault with a firearm, attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Police responded to calls about the shooting at 5:34 p.m. and found the victim in a parking lot along with a growing crowd of bystanders, police said. Officers rendered first aid and conducted crowd control until medics arrived to transport the victim to a local trauma center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition as of Thursday. Police say he is expected to survive.
“During the initial investigation, it was determined the victim was shot in the parking lot and suspects fled prior to police arrival,” police said. “Multiple witnesses were able to provide officers with descriptions of possible involved persons. In addition to witness statements, the parking lot was processed for evidence and we worked collaboratively with Hillsdale Shopping Center to obtain security footage.”
Search warrants served Thursday resulted in the arrest of the suspects and the location of “evidence linking all four to this incident,” police said.
The investigation is ongoing “as we look into the motive” and search for possible additional suspects and associated crimes, police said.
Police are calling on those who were at Hillsdale Shopping Center between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to contact police with any useful information. They can contact San Mateo Police Detective Sgt. Paul Pak at (650) 522-7660 or ppak@cityofsanmateo.org.
