Driver who struck fire hydrant in Redwood City arrested for DUI, hit-and-run

A driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run following a solo-vehicle collision with a fire hydrant in Redwood City on Wednesday night, according to police.

Redwood City police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Madison Avenue and El Camino Real on a report that the vehicle collided into the hydrant before fleeing the scene.

The wrecked vehicle was located a short distance away by officers, who noticed the suspect displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. Using a Preliminary Alochol Screening device, officers determined the suspect was over twice the legal limit for driving, police said. He was booked into San Mateo County Jail.
