Two intruders broke into a Redwood City bank while it was closed to the public this morning but did not make off with any cash, since they “were masked bandits of the wildlife kind.”
The incident unfolded when an ATM user spotted the juvenile raccoons inside the bank, at first thinking he was seeing a stuffed animal on top of a desk, according to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA). He then saw the animal move, realized he was staring at a live raccoon and called PHS/SPCA.
“The bank managers let our rescue staff into the bank, and after about ten minutes of chasing the raccoons around the bank, we were finally able to safely shoo them outside,” PHS/SPCA Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox said. “They apparently didn’t want to leave the bank.”
Based upon muddy pawprints found a on a tree outside the bank, PHS/SPCA suspects the raccoons climbed the tree to the bank’s roof, then managed to crawl into the air ducts and fell through the ceiling tiles on the floor of the bank.
“There were several broken ceiling tiles, and the masked bandits knocked papers around and even a computer over,” Tarbox said. “Thankfully the raccoons were not injured during their morning escapade, and to our knowledge they didn’t abscond with any money.”
