The new Makerspace at the Redwood City Downtown Library will celebrate its “Grand Opening” Tues., March 1, as all public libraries throughout the city open up for indoor events. The Makerspace offers technology, hand crafting tools and a shared collaboration space for people of all ages, according to the City.
March will see the Makerspace unveil a variety of “inspiring programs” for adults that want to make and create,” such as Open Sewing, Art Salon, Digital Makers and other options, per organizers, while Drop in Tech Help on Wednesday mornings will offer one-on-one help to those who bring in their devices.
Kid Makers, Crafty Wednesdays, Teen Makers and Family Makers programs will be offered for kids and teens. The Makerspace page provides more info about these and a plethora of other options for kids, teens, adults and Spanish speakers.
Community members can also access the Makerspace for Open Hours and Coworking Space Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As part of the space, there are reconfigurable tables and chairs for collaborative work, as well as TVs with HDMI connections and laptops available for checkout at the Reading Room kiosk.
New features coming soon to the Makerspace include 3D printers and laser cutter, podcast equipment and a small meeting room, said City organizers.
Funding in the amount of $270,000 from the Redwood City Library Foundation was initially approved at the July 26, 2021 City Council Meeting to create the Makerspace. The foundation also raised additional funding for the project.
