San Mateo detour signage not deterring rule-breaking drivers

Drivers keep violating the no-left-turn rule at E. 25th Avenue and South Delaware Street despite “an obnoxious amount of signage,” according to San Mateo police.

Drivers headed eastbound toward the intersection are currently only permitted to make a right turn (south) due to construction, police said.

“With two no left turn signs, three right turn signs, and the lane marker itself, people are still making illegal left turns onto Delaware,” police said in a statement on social media. “We’re not sure where the confusion lies.”

On Wednesday, the San Mateo Police Department Traffic Unit wrote 60 citations for this violation. It wrote at least another 25 this morning, police said.

Police pleaded with the public to obey the detour while street work continues.

“We know detours and road work are inconvenient, but it is all temporary and the signs and detour are there for a reason,” police said.
