The Redwood City Council has approved a contract to implement safety improvements at three Caltrain grade crossings — Whipple Avenue, Broadway and Main Street — aiming to reduce hazards to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
At Monday’s meeting, the council approved a contract for $841,360 in federal funds with Granite Rock Company of San Jose.
The project will include construction of city sidewalks and crosswalks, installation of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) ramps leading to and from the railroad pedestrian gates, as well as enhancements to street lighting by the tracks.
Also, the traffic signal at Broadway/Marshall Street will be upgraded to improve traffic flow and reduce intersection delay when railroad gates are down, according to city documents. The addition of bicycle warning pavement markings will aim to increase bicycle safety, the city said.
Caltrain property at those sites will see upgrades to warning devices (crossing gates, flashing beacons, warning signs, etc.).
