Police fatally shot a suspect who opened fire on them in the 1900 block of Broadway in Redwood City Saturday afternoon, according to the Redwood City Police Department.
Police received a 911 call about a handgun-holding Hispanic man in his 30s who was reportedly pacing back and forth near the exterior ATM machines of the Wells Fargo bank, police said. The suspect’s behavior prompted a response from multiple officers trained in de-escalation and crisis intervention.
Despite attempts to establish a rapport and de-escalate the situation, the man was not responsive and “continued to move back and forth with his finger on the trigger of the gun,” police said.
Officers were set to deploy less lethal weapons on the suspect when, “without warning,” he “took a combative stance, raised his gun, and fired an unspecified number of shots in the direction of the officers,” police said.
Officers “immediately responded with lethal force and the male was incapacitated,” police said.
The man died at the scene after attempts were made to revive him.
Per protocol, all involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave and the incident is being investigated by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
