The Zoppe Circus’ new drive-in experience at the Port of Redwood City is going so well, the city aims to extend its current run of shows into November and to provide discounted or sponsored show options for disadvantaged families.
The popular circus that visits the city annually during the fall moved to a drive-in format this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 45 shows were scheduled from Oct. 1 to Oct. 25, and “attendance has been exceptional to date,” city officials say. Reviews are “very positive,” the city added.
The Port of Redwood has approved a request by city staff to continue shows into November, and the city has tentative plans to add shows through as late as Nov. 26, depending on weather conditions. On Monday, the city council is set to consider amending the agreement between the city and circus to make that happen.
“Staff and the Port of Redwood City are working together to raise funds from the business community to support significantly discounted tickets for disadvantaged families,” the city said.
Exactly how many additional weeks the show will continue isn’t set in stone.
“Staff will use current sales data, consideration of any Port-related issues and the 10 day weather forecast to determine the appropriateness of extending the run,” the city said. “This decision will be made by 12pm on Friday for the following weeks’ shows.”
