After being appointed mayor in December, Rodriguez noted San Mateo had been tested in 2020 like few other times in history. And while there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel, the challenges are not over, he said.
“When this pandemic first hit us, San Mateo was fortunate to have been on solid financial footing,” Rodriguez said, “but we will no doubt face some very difficult fiscal decisions in the months ahead as the impacts of the pandemic become more clear.”
The city must continue to find creative ways to support small businesses and the community members most impacted by the pandemic, he added.
Meanwhile, the mayor stated the importance of continuing work on pre-pandemic priorities such as public safety, 911 response times, traffic congestion and robust community engagement on the city’s general plan.
“There is no going back to where we were before, but with every challenge, there is opportunity, and we will seize upon these opportunities,” Rodriguez said.
