A driver traveling the wrong way on northbound Highway 101 just south of Broadway Sunday morning was killed in a head-on collision, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP responded to calls about the fatal collision at 6:48 a.m. and learned that gray Mazda MPV minivan had entered the northbound highway lanes the wrong way, traveling southbound from Broadway, according to the CHP. As the Mazda continued traveling the wrong way in the No. 4 lane, it collided with a Kenworth dump truck. The Mazda’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the Kenworth’s driver was not injured.

“It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision and is still under investigation,” the CHP said.

The deceased driver’s identity wasn’t immediately available.

Any witnesses are encouraged to contact Officer Wilkinson at the Redwood City CHP office, (650) 369-6261.
