2-alarm structure fire closes busy Redwood City intersection

A 2-alarm structure fire at a busy Redwood City intersection Sunday afternoon sent plumes of black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.

The fire was reported just before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Whipple Avenue and Veterans Boulevard, fire officials said. During the incident, the Redwood City Fire Department advised the public to avoid the area and to remain indoors if particularly sensitive to smoke.

The roadway was reopened to traffic at about 7:15 p.m., according to the Redwood City Police Department.
