SamTrans takes step toward zero-emission fleet

in Infrastructure

SamTrans has hired a consultant to help redevelop and prepare its North and South base bus yard facilities to support a 100 percent zero-emission fleet. Its Board of Directors hopes to accomplish full conversion to zero emission by 2038. Electric buses are expected to begin revenue service in 2023, the transit agency said.

The Board recently awarded a $415,000 to Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. for preliminary design services for electric infrastructure at the SamTrans bus bases, where vehicles are stored, maintained and dispatched from. New equipment will need to be installed to  “efficiently and safely dispatch and maintain the zero-emission vehicles,” according to the SamTrans.

Preliminary estimates to electrify the SamTrans’ fleet will involve nearly $400 million in investment into existing SamTrans infrastructure, the transit agency said.
