A passenger was in critical condition and the driver was sent to intensive care following a DUI crash in San Carlos early Saturday, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 2700 block of San Carlos Ave. about 2:13 a.m. about a vehicle that struck a parked car, then a tree, before becoming fully engulfed in flames.
Passersby called 911 and assisted in removing the passengers from the moving vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said. Responding deputies pulled the driver, identified as Salvador Madrigalaguilar, away from the burning vehicle. While doing so, they “smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage, deputies said.
“Based on the observations and witness statements, it was believed he was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
When Madrigalaguilar is released from the hospital, he will be booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI with great bodily injury.
