Caltrain’s electric fleet will provide public Wi-Fi onboard trains.
The transit agency recently awarded two contracts to Hayward-based Nomad Digital, Inc. for Broadband Communications Services.
The company will install, operate and maintain Caltrain’s broadband services to both “provide valuable wireless connectivity between our new electric train fleet and central control, as well as for public-facing Wi-Fi,” according to Caltrain. Initial funding for the $20.9 million contract, which includes $5.6 million for maintenance support over four years, was provided by the State Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program.
“Silicon Valley’s train needs Wi-Fi,” Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard said. “Onboard Wi-Fi will allow our riders to get a head start on the work day, or decompress on their way home, staying connected with the world outside. This is one more reason for commuters to choose Caltrain over sitting in highway gridlock.”
