Redwood City police Chief Dan Mulholland will host a public meeting on Zoom to discuss the department’s new policy for use of body worn cameras.
Chief Mulholland will deliver a presentation and then answer questions submitted ahead of time by email at the event, which will take place Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m.
In 2016, a San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury recommended that agencies not using body worn cameras implement a plan to get them, but a lack of funding delayed their procurement, according to the city. Two years later, the Redwood City Police Department (RCPD) received $150,146 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance to implement a body-worn camera program by September 2021 that meets strict federal guidelines. The city’s policy also sought to meet local and state guidelines.
In November last year, City Council approved a $612,605 contract with AXON Enterprises, Inc. to purchase 100 body-worn cameras and receive related services, with a majority of the funding coming out of the Police Department’s budget.
For those wanting to ask Chief Mulholland questions about RCPD’s new body-worn camera policy, email bodyworncamera@redwoodcity.org. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) will also be developed and shared on the Police Department’s web page.
