Cars no longer cross the Caltrain tracks at 28th Avenue in San Mateo. The new east-west connection on 28th opened to traffic today as part of the ongoing 25th Avenue Grade Separation Project. The project will ultimately create grade separations at 25th, 28th and 31st Avenues along with a new, relocated Hillsdale Station, according to Caltrain.
Now that the grade separation project at 28th Avenue is done, the roadway will become a primary means of getting between El Camino Real and Delaware as crews turn their focus onto 25th Avenue, where they will work to lower the road between Palm Avenue and S. Delaware Street. Over the four months needed to lower the road, the eastbound lanes on East 25th will be completely closed, while one westbound lane will remain open.
The 31st Avenue connection is expected to open to the public this fall.
Meanwhile, the new Hillsdale Station, relocated about one block north of its previous location, between 28th and 31st avenues, is expected to open to the public this spring with an elevated center-boarding platform for safe, more convenient pedestrian access, according to Caltrain.
