Foundation’s women-and-science-inspired mural underway in San Carlos

in A&E/Community

Community members in the vicinity of 852 Laurel St. in San Carlos now through July 2 can check out the progress on a new mural, “Horizon Light”—a public art project made possible by the Community Foundation of San Carlos in partnership with FINDINGS and the Heising-Simons Foundation in Los Altos.

The mural is the first such public project for the Community Foundation of San Carlos, which per its mission, performs strategic philanthropy to create and amplify sustained and measurable impact for the San Carlos community.

According to the foundation, San Carlos was selected as the Silicon Valley location by FINDINGS, a national public art series celebrating women and science that was created by renowned Brooklyn-based artist, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. The series has been appearing in cities nationwide since the fall of 2020.

“Horizon Light is a vibrant AR-enabled mural that finds parallels between the sparse luminous matter astrophysicists use to detect black holes with the work that women do in revealing hidden truths about our world,” said Phingbodhipakkiya about her unfolding work. See her full artist’s statement about the San Carlos mural here.

In bringing her mural work to San Carlos and beyond, Phingbodhipakkiya’s FINDINGS has partnered with the Heising-Simons Foundation, which looks to advance climate/clean energy solutions, support groundbreaking science research, further youth learning and champion human rights for everyone.
