Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at its commencement ceremony on Saturday, “in recognition of his brave leadership in service of justice and democracy.”
“The resilience of the Ukrainian people is a testament to best of human spirit,” University President Beth Martin said at the ceremony.
Martin said Zelenskyy represents NDNU’s values that include “social justice and care for the individual, [and] kindness towards others.” NDNU is among dozens of other U.S. universities that have awarded the Ukranian president with honorary degrees amid Ukraine’s ongoing battle against Russian invasion.
“The degree will be delivered to the Ukrainian Consulate in San Francisco in the coming weeks,” according to a university statement.
One of California’s oldest universities, NDNU held its 170th commencement on the Walter Gleason Center Lawn on its campus. Ninety-nine graduates were awarded degrees.
Martin assumed her role in September amid a period of transition for the university, which recently ended its bachelor’s program in order to focus more on professional degrees that support the in-demand fields of psychology, education, business administration and public administration. Degree completion programs in business and psychology are also offered.
