San Mateo County will provide $1 million in financial support to Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM), which operates more than 30 health centers in Northern California, including in Redwood City, San Mateo and South San Francisco, in order to increase its abortion care capacity.
The financial support is one part of an action plan that anticipates that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, potentially leading to bans on abortions in other states and an influx of out-of-state patients seeking care in California.
The Board of Supervisors today approved the Women’s Reproductive Freedom and Healthcare Privacy Action Plan.
In addition to providing funding to Planned Parenthood, the action plan intends to create a buffer zone ordinance to protect employees and patients from harassment at clinics in unincorporated areas of the county; to develop an advocacy agenda; to form a Reproductive Rights and Healthcare Privacy Subcommittee; and to launch a campaign to inform patients that San Mateo County Health continues to offer reproductive services, according to County officials.
“With the likely reversal of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court looming, San Mateo County and California as a whole must prepare for the inevitable increase of women seeking care here that will be unavailable to them elsewhere in the nation,” said Supervisor Dave Pine.
