In its first ever match against a national team, Bay Cities FC is set to host the Guatemala Under-20 National Team for a friendly at Sequoia High School on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Led by head coach Rafael Loredo, Guatemala’s Under-20 roster includes players aged 17-19 who play at clubs throughout the Central American nation and in the U.S. The young side defeated Canada and Mexico before narrowly losing to the Dominican Republic U20 team on penalties in the CONCACAF U20 Championship on July 1. The success booked the club a spot at the 2023 U20 World Cup in Indonesia.
“We are excited to be able to participate in bringing in an international team to the Peninsula,” said Anders Perez, president and head coach of Bay Cities, a third division professional soccer team based in Redwood City that’s in the midst of its inaugural season in the National Independent Soccer Association. “This Guatemala team is a once in a generation squad that made the U-20 World Cup. We’ll be up against the best of the best young players of a great football country. I encourage every football fan to see what will be a match for the ages right here in Redwood City.”
In March, Bay Cities FC hosted its first international friendly in a 1-1 tie with Liga MX side Club Tijuana’s Under-23 team.
