San Mateo County public safety agencies honor fallen public safety professionals at the 20th Annual San Mateo County Public Safety Memorial Service on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The formal tribute organized annually by Redwood City Fire Deputy Chief Greg Da Cunha is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Cunningham Memorial Chapel at Notre Dame de Namur University, located at 1500 Ralston Ave. in Belmont.
The service will be non-denominational and will be followed by an informal reception, according to the City of Redwood City.
Deputy Chief Cunha’s personal interest in this effort stems from the loss of his friend and co-worker, Firefighter Matt Smith, who died in the line of duty in 2001.
“This memorial tribute is a County-wide way to recognize those public safety professionals who have passed, and honor those who selflessly serve the public,” city officials said.
Among participating local agencies are police and fire departments, CHP, American Medical Response and the County’s Sheriff’s Office. All will have representatives present to read the names of their fallen members and retirees who have passed away.
Members of the San Mateo County Chaplaincy will conduct the ceremony, with ceremonial music provided by the Silicon Valley Pipe Band of Saratoga.
