Crystal Springs Regional Trail visitors can now learn about the area’s history while enjoying nature.
Two interpretive panels have been installed near the trail marker for the Portolá Expedition Camp Site at Hillcrest Boulevard in Millbrae.
The panels describe the practices of the native Ohlone inhabitants as well as the Portolá Expedition’s experiences during their exploration of the region, according to San Mateo County Parks.
The Millbrae Historical Society, the San Mateo County Historical Association and the Millbrae Community Foundation worked with city and county officials to create the panels, which were dedicated on Dec. 15.
It’s part of the broader Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail Project, an effort to designate a 90-mile trail that traces the steps of the Spanish expedition and recognize the native people they encountered.
