Saturday morning in San Carlos is shaping up to be a great day to buy a crepe and step outside to take in the unveiling of the city’s latest mural, “Horizon Light.”
That morning, Sat., Aug. 14 from 8-9:30 a.m., the Community Foundation of San Carlos and artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the mural now adorning the wall shared by The Crepe Stop and Bianchini’s Market at 852 Laurel St. in San Carlos.
The Horizon Light mural is part of the national Findings Project, “a public art series celebrating women and science,” per the foundation. Phingbodhipakkiya’s colorful rendering spotlights the work of UC Berkeley Professor Dr. Chung-Pei Ma, a renowned astrophysicist who studies black holes.
At the beginning of the creative process, artist Phingbodhipakkiya remarked that her work “is a vibrant AR-enabled mural that finds parallels between the sparse luminous matter astrophysicists use to detect black holes with the work that women do in revealing hidden truths about our world.” Read the artist’s full statement here.
Phingbodhipakkiya has donated several works which will be available to purchase at the ribbon cutting ceremony and on the foundation’s website. Purchases will support future public art projects in the local community. Click here to peruse the works.
In a statement, the foundation said it’s honored that San Carlos was selected as one of the nine locations across the country for this artist’s work “that reimagines science and creates a moving tribute to womankind.” The Horizon Light mural project was funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation.
